Combined Heat and Power : |
Combined Heat and Power, or CHP, is the Integration of Production of usable heat and power (usually electricity) in a single process. It utilizes the heat produced in electricity generation rather than releasing it into the atmosphere and wasting it.
CHP, is an efficient, clean, and reliable approach to generating power and thermal energy from a single fuel source. By installing a CHP system designed to meet the thermal and electrical base loads of a facility, CHP can greatly increase the facility's operational efficiency and decrease energy costs.
CHP provides the following direct benefits:
• energy savings. a reduction in the cost of energy, improving the competitiveness of industry and business.
• cost savings over electricity sourced from the grid and heat generated by on-site boilers
• high overall efficiency – up to 80% or more at the point of use
• additional guarantee of continuity in energy supplies for operator & consumer
• proven and reliable technology with established supplier base
• flexible and responsive heat supplies – the thermal energy (heat or cooling)
• reduced overall demand from centralized, such as large scale coal or gas fired power stations – thus reducing stress on the electricity grid

CHP can provide cooling alongside heat and power from the same energy source. Here excess heat produced is cooled by absorption chillers linked to the CHP system. This provides chilled water for cooling to be circulated around a building or community. This is particularly useful for schemes that require a large amount of air conditioning. This is also known as combined cooling, heat and power (CCHP).
Basic CHP Components
Prime Mover generates mechanical energy (reciprocating engine, turbine, fuel cell)
Generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy
Waste Heat Recovery includes one or more heat exchangers that capture and recycle the heat from the prime mover
Thermal Utilization equipment converts the recycled heat into useful heating, cooling, and/or dehumidification
Operating Control Systems insure the CHP components function properly together
